Guiding you with grace: Essential etiquette for honoring loved ones

Simple ways to show care, respect, and support when it matters most

Attending a service is a meaningful way to honor someone’s life and support those who are grieving. While every service is different, a few thoughtful gestures can go a long way in helping others feel seen, respected, and cared for.

Do’s

Do arrive on time - Plan to arrive a few minutes early so you can be present from the beginning without disruption.

Do offer your condolences - A simple “I’m sorry for your loss” is always appropriate. It doesn’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful.

Do dress respectfully - Choose attire that feels modest and appropriate for the setting. Dark or neutral colors are typically preferred, but comfort and respect matter most.

Do silence your phone - Keep phones on silent or turned off during the service to avoid interruptions.

Do follow the family’s lead - Pay attention to the tone of the service—whether formal, casual, religious, or celebratory—and respond accordingly.

Do respect personal space - Grief looks different for everyone. Some may welcome conversation, while others may prefer quiet support.

Don’ts

Don’t feel pressure to say the perfect thing - There are no perfect words. Your presence alone is often the most meaningful gesture.

Don’t take photos unless invited - Services are private moments. Avoid taking pictures unless the family has clearly indicated it’s okay.

Don’t arrive late if possible - If you do arrive after the service has started, enter quietly and sit near the back.

Don’t bring distractions - Avoid eating, texting, or anything that may draw attention away from the service.

Don’t compare grief or experiences - Try to avoid phrases like “I know exactly how you feel.” Everyone’s experience is unique.

Don’t overstay - Be mindful of the family’s time and energy, especially during visitations or receptions.
